Challenge Life Continues Attendance Program in Nuiqsut!
Al Strack, principal of the Trapper School in Nuiqsut, Challenge Life and the parents of students at the Trapper School are continuing their efforts to make a difference in school attendance and excellence. Last year, with the help of Challenge Life, the Trapper School recognized students with perfect atttendance and 90% attendance on a monthly basis. The faculty also helped to identify students that performed in an exceptional manner. The Challenge Life program, because of the role played by the school, the parents and the students, operates under the banner of; “Education, It’s A Family Affair.”
Last year, Challenge Life provided the students who were recognized and their parents with a tee shirt or long sleeve shirt in school colors. The awarding of shirts to the parents was a small token of thanks for the role they play in both the attendance and the academic achievement of their children. Challenge Life will continue the program in Nuiqsut this year.
Dates Set For Fall College Tour
Challenge Life is hoping to build off the success of 2009 and 2010 by establishing dates for the “2011 College Tour Program.” Students with an interest in continuing their athletic and academic careers at the collegiate level will be visiting Junior Colleges, NAIA, Division I, II and III schools in the Pacific Northwest. Originally slated for early October, the 2011 trip will take place November 16 – 21 to allow greater participation by different sport athletes and to avoid testing conflicts. The program is hoping to take 20 students from throughout the Arctic Region. The following are some of the trip objectives:
- Expose underclassmen to the opportunities that are available for higher education if they start preparing academically, athletically and financially for the future.
- Provide exposure for Arctic Slope students to coaches and schools in the lower 48.
- Serve as a motivation tool for students hoping to attend a school of higher learning.
- Allow our young men and women to travel and see how students in other areas of the country are preparing for the future.
Leadership Program
I just received an email from Agnes Okakok of Wainwright who is joining the Challenge Life Leadership Program. Please let me know if you have some other students you think will make good leaders and enjoy working with younger students. This is a paid position!
Will You Walk the Walk?
Challenge Life Co-Director, Mike Hajdukovich, is flying to Barrow this weekend for one purpose, to run with the Barrow crosscountry team in a community fun run. Now think about this, all of you that are interested in health, what a perfect time to send a message. Get out there Saturday morning and run, jog, walk or craw on this short community fun run. Can you imagine the message it sends about health and activity if the mayor, Peggy, Donna, Tino, Roland, Harold and gulp, Sarah are out there running.
