Summer Slam Sports Camp Recap…2/3

We are two-thirds of the way through the North Slope Borough’s Summer Slam of camps and so far, the response has been amazing. The volleyball camp was June 8th-12th in Atqasuk with several college coaches and professional trainers working the event. There were 25+ kids from each one of the seven North Slope Borough communities in attendance outside of Barrow (who ran their own camp). Kids participated in different events throughout the day, including a morning workout session, skill development, team concepts, game play, competitions and other sports games. The feedback from this event was amazing. Our second camp was the basketball camp June 22-28 in Point Hope. There were 51 total kids at the camp, representing all seven North Slope Borough communities outside of Barrow. The kids had a great time and participated in morning workouts, skill development, physical workouts, team concept development, team shooting, contests, game play and tournaments. Of the 51 kids, 8 boys and 8 girls were selected, based on their skill, attitude, and ability, to become part of a travel team. That travel team is now in Spokane, Washington to play in a team camp together. This is super exciting for two reasons. First, it exposes the best talent on the North Slope to better players and teams. This will encourage and incite our NSB kids to practice harder, be more disciplined, and to spread the word. Secondly, this tournament gives the NSB kids a chance to create friendships, explore their passions outside of basketball, and to dream bigger. What a great opportunity! These camps could not have been done without the help of the North Slope Borough, the Mayor and her office, the NSB school district, Challenge Life, and the many other chaperones and coaches who put the events together and made sure the camps operated as best as possible. Thank you! Remember, the NSB running camp will begin August 3rd-7th in Anaktuvuk Pass. Sign up at your local North Slope Borough office. Justin Bourne Challenge Life
